Bulldogs make the perfect family pet, especially for kids. They are the definition of relaxed as they are mostly content with laying around with the family. That means if you’re looking for a pet to take running or be active then keep looking. Bulldogs usually don’t venture too far away from their families which is more of a testament to the strong bonds they form.

Huskies

If you need a more active dog then here is your breed. Huskies are quickly becoming one of the most popular dog breeds and it’s easy to see why. They make great family pets and love being active. Maybe a little too much though as Huskies usually require a lot of attention and exercise. But if that is something you and your family can provide then the Husky could be the right dog for you. Just be warned though, they love to howl.

Golden Retrieverspopular-dogs-golden

The quintessential family dog, the Golden Retriever is a mainstay as one of the most popular dog breeds. It’s hard to imagine the typical American family without a Golden Retriever right there front in center. That is why the Golden Retriever is one of the best dogs, they are extremely friendly and get along with the whole family. It’s hard to deny all that when one of the main characters in Homeward Bound is a Golden Retriever.

Pugspopular-dogs-pugs

Unlike most small dogs, the pug is rarely aggressive. Thus making them an ideal family pet as they get along great with children. And like children the Pug is basically a ball of energy. They are extremely playful which is an added bonus to their temperament towards kids.

Most of the dogs on this list are inherently friendly, even to strangers. Yet sometimes when looking for a family pet you want something more protective. That is not saying any of the other dogs are not, just that the German Shepherd is one of the best in that department. They are fiercely loyal towards their families and protective of them and their territory. Yet they are also very intelligent and obedient which allows room for good training.

Border Colliespopular-dogs-border-collies

The Border Collie is by far the most energetic dog on this list. They are also arguably the smartest dog on this list as well. These two attributes alone make the Border Collie one of the most popular dog breeds out there. They require tons of both mental and physical stimulation or else they begin to act out. They are good with kids, but not great due to their herding mentality. That being said if socialized and trained properly, you should not run into any problems.

These gentle, mid-sized dogs are usually described as amiable. This combination of size and temperament make them a great breed for families. They get along with children very well and can make great companions for them. They are very curious and intelligent which is not always a good combination in a dog. Therefore they require more strict training to help keep them in check.

Labrador Retrieverpopular-dogs-labs

Labs are by far the best family dogs. According to the American Kennel Club the Labrador Retriever has been the #1 dog in America for the past 26 years. It is hard to argue with the numbers but for any one that has spent time with a Lab can easily see why they are so popular. Anything you are looking for in a dog for the family the lab has. They are gentle, kind, intelligent, protective, and playful; they have it all. And though they are extremely active they are also easy to train. There is not a whole lot the Lab has or can do which is why they are the most popular dog breed out there.
